The University of Kentucky’s Office of Economic Development and Real Estate (ED&RE) advances the university’s land-grant mission by fostering statewide economic growth and strategically managing UK’s real estate portfolio. The office encompasses six units: the Office of Business Engagement, Coldstream Research Campus, Real Estate Services, the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center, Economic Engagement, and the Economic Development Collaborative. Together, these units strengthen Kentucky’s workforce and businesses, drive innovation, and enhance community vitality—positioning the Commonwealth for long-term prosperity and creating a stronger future for Kentucky and UK graduates.

From nursery rhymes to running wire: one mother’s path into the trades How a stay-at-home mother transitioned into construction through the Walsh x UK Pre-Apprentice program

Carol Savchick was handed a degree in Fine Art painting when she walked across the Eastern Kentucky University graduation stage a decade ago. She spent the next years of her life singing nursery rhymes, perfecting new recipes and managing her family calendar. In pockets of free time, she would hover over a canvas with a paintbrush and acrylic paint to pull together pieces she would later try to commission.  This was until she realized she was ready to work outside the home.

Turner Construction, University of Kentucky celebrates 5th Construction Business Accelerator cohort

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Turner Construction Company and the University of Kentucky honored the latest graduates of the Construction Business Accelerator program May 12 at the College of Design's Gray Design Building, bringing the program's total alumni count to 84 participants representing 72 companies since its founding in 2022. The graduation marked the completion of the program's fifth cohort, which included 19 participants — among them five current UK students — and added to the 65 graduates across 58 companies who completed the program between 2022 and 2025.

Walsh Construction, University of Kentucky launch second Pre-Apprenticeship cohort

LEXINGTON, Ky., — Walsh Construction and the University of Kentucky officially kicked off the second cohort of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program April 14, continuing a workforce development partnership aimed at creating sustainable pathways into the construction trades for Lexington-area residents.
